Volunteers are needed for the 2014 Mason Crest Elementary Fun Run

ANNANDALE, Va. — On Nov. 14, the Mason Crest Elementary Parent / Teacher Organization  and the Mason Crest Elementary School faculty and staff will host a fun run for the students of Mason Crest Elementary. The theme of the fun run is “Many Countries, One Community,” and each Mason Crest Elementary School class has selected a country to “run across” as part of emphasizing the diverse backgrounds and heritage that Mason Crest Elementary brings together.

This event will serve as the Mason Crest PTO’s  major fundraiser for the year. In order to make it a success, the PTO is asking for volunteers to help us with various tasks before and during the event.  If you can and are willing to help, please visit our volunteer signup page at masoncrestpto.org. Volunteers are needed for the Kindergarten Environmental Print Photo Project

ANNANDALE, Va. — The kindergarten classes of Mason Crest Elementary School will soon begin a study unit on environmental print. In this unit, the students will learn to notice print in the world around them. Examples would include learning to recognize print on items like on stop signs, cereal boxes or  as they drive by stores and restaurants. In order to supplement the photos provided in the environmental print alphabet book provided by the school system the kindergarten education team is asking the entire Mason Crest Community to provide pictures showing things the students may recognize in their local neighborhood. Examples may include a photo of a local Safeway sign to illustrate the letter S, or Kmart to illustrate the letter K. Photos can also be taken of items around the home. Examples like a photo of an Xbox for the letter X, or a photo of a jar of Jiff peanut butter to represent the letter J.

Photos can be submitted by email to photo.project@masoncrestpto.org.

For additional information on the Kindergarten Photo Project contact Jacqueline Heller at JMHeller@fcps.edu.

Parents and Guardians are invited to complete the FCPS Survey on Full-day Monday Schedule for Elementary Schools

FAIRFAX COUNTY, Va. — The School Board is discussing the possibility of lengthening the current shortened Monday schedule for elementary schools to a full instructional day and is asking parents to provide feedback before the School Board is scheduled to vote on the issue at its June 26 meeting. Parents and teachers are invited to complete a survey (available online at www.surveymonkey.com/s/fulldayMondayparents) on this proposed change by Monday, June 23 at 5 p.m. More details are available at www.fcps.edu/news/fulldaymonday.shtml .

At its May 28 and June 16 work sessions, the Board heard the results of a working group composed of 23 members, including principals and central office staff, whose charge was to review the current practices for scheduling students at the elementary, middle and high school levels, and then, make recommendations to Superintendent Karen Garza that will improve effectiveness and efficiency. Several recommendations to lengthen Mondays were shared with the School Board, including providing 20 minutes of recess each day within the regular elementary schedule and providing additional resources and policy flexibility at the elementary level to increase teacher-directed planning time. In addition, the School Board heard from the working group reasons to switch from the 180-day calendar to the 990-hour option for meeting state accreditation requirements. This change would eliminate the need to add snow makeup days to the end of the school year.

Special Bylaws Voting Meeting

ANNANDALE, Va. — On Friday, June 20, 2014, a special PTO Meeting for paid PTO members will take place at Mason Crest Elementary at 8:15 am to vote on the proposed revised PTO Bylaws.

As we discussed at the PTO meeting on May 15, Elizabeth Bille and Tim Sample reviewed our bylaws and made proposed changes. The goal in revising these bylaws was four-fold

(a) to streamline them, remove redundant language, and strike content that was not applicable to our PTO (but was a holdover from a PTA template we had received during our organization’s infancy for example);

(b) to take out extraneous sections that do not need to be contained in an organization’s bylaws (for example, auditing procedures–that are better served in a standalone policy document, which we have created);

(c) to build upon our learnings from our first couple of years as an organization, revising time frames where we noted we needed more flexibility or where we wanted our calendar to better correspond with the school calendar; codifying that many roles can be shared by two or more people, etc.; and

(d) creating a bit more role clarity between the Board members and committees.  Currently, the elected Board positions and non-elected committee positions have quite a bit of overlap, which can lead to confusion.  Thus, we are proposing that the elected Board positions will be primarily responsible for setting the strategy and goals of the organization, and for coordinating the work of any committees that logically related to/flow up to that Board position; and then the committees, working with the Board member, would execute upon those goals/strategy/activities.

Copies of the current and proposed revised bylaws are available for review .

Paid members who cannot attend in person may assign another paid member to vote in proxy by completing the Special Meeting Proxy Form.

Questions can be directed to Rock Rockenbach, PTO President, at Rockenbach@aol.com.
